As Ford prepares for the 45th anniversary celebration of the Ford Mustang on April 16-19 in Birmingham, Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park, they will bring us back in time with some small facts about the Mustang. They started us with a Ford Mustang 1964-1974 that is rich in history and racing heritage. For me this is more of a list of "Did You Know" type facts that I will post below but I have passed some of the more popular ones.
Because most of us hardcore Mustang fanatics know Mustang debuted on April 17, 1964 but did you know it cost only $ 2,368. Another little-known fact is that Ford estimates annual sales of only 100,000 units but with 22,000 orders taken on the first day Ford quickly realized that there was something special. They ended up selling 417,000 Mustangs in the next 12 months which is really an amazing achievement.



One of the facts that struck me was how 93,000 children were favored by the Mustang pedals for the 1964 Christmas season and during the 1966 model year, Mustang sales exceeded 1 million. 1964-1974 Mustang Facts

The original Ford Mustang debuted on April 17, 1964 for $ 2,368 - an offer even at the time.
Dealers are inundated with vehicle demand. In Garland, Texas, 15 customers bid the same Mustang, and the winner insists to sleep in the car overnight to ensure that it will not be sold from below it before the check is cleared the next day.
Ford estimated annual sales of around 100,000 units, but 22,000 Mustang orders were taken on the first day, and sales reached 417,000 in the first 12 months of cars on the market.
No later than a month after its introduction, Ford's new Mustang was on the racetrack as a speed car for the Indianapolis 50064 race.
Early Mustangs have been prominent in hundreds of famous films to date, starting in 1964 with the James Bond film Goldfinger, in which Bond Aston Martin DB5 pursues a white Mustang convoy.
Mustang-crazed parents bought 93,000 pedal-powered Mustang children during the 1964 Christmas season.
In 1965, Shelby GT350 was introduced, with a 306 horsepower V-8 engine, giving the Mustang performance credibility.
Sales of the Mustang passed the one million mark in March 1966. The 1966 Mustang was the first - and probably the only car parked on the 86th floor observation deck at the Empire State Building in New York. Ford engineers unloaded the Mustang convoy in 1966 and took it into four parts using a passenger elevator in the building.
Mustang-mania hit full power. 289-cid V-8 "Hi-Po" engine is available. Carroll Shelby adapted the Shelby GT350 competition for Sport Car Club of America (SCCA), and the GT350 then won three SCCA championships live.
The 1967 Mustang was regarded by many as a high watermark for Mustang designs in the 1960s. Model 2 + 2 switches from semi-notchback to fullback sweeping roofline. Three separate tailed lights, longer nose and larger grille are made for more aggressive positions.
In 1968, the Cobra Jet 428 engine was introduced as part of a package of options devoted to fans, and this helped make the Shelby GT500 the King of the Road - KR.


The "steed for every need" philosophy resulted in 11 different powertrain combinations in 1969. New models added to the ranks include hot rods such as Boss 302 302, Boss 429 and Boss 1, delivering the Mustang muscle car legacy. Grande's luxury model was also introduced.
In 1970, the water ram "Shaker" hood scoop could be ordered on any Mustang equipped with 35-cid or larger V-8.
The 1971 Mustang is the biggest Mustang ever - almost one foot longer and about 600 pounds heavier than the original. Boss 351, with 351 "Cleveland" V-8 and Cobra Jet, debuted. Mach 1 is available with various powertrains, topped by 370 horsepower 429 Super Cobra Jet.
In 1973, the impact of gasoline shortages, rising insurance premiums and controlling emissions made the era of cars getting closer. The 1973 model was the last Mustang Falcon-native platform, and the conversion model was stopped.
